She found it all— or at least the
makings of it— on a hillside lot in Los Angeles. Buying the
1930s Normandy-stylc cottage on the ivy-covered hill was
just the first step, however, on her journey toward a home
with the indoor-outdoor connections— and the gorgeous
gardens— she craved.
The next move for Joan, a former interior designer, was to
join a gardening class at the Los Angeles Arboretum. There
she became friends with landscape pro Lisa Moseley, who
helped her hatch a plan to ditch the ivy, terrace the hill, and
surround the house with green, Joan had a lengthy wish list:
cutting dowers, fresh lettuce, wisteria, fruit trees, and spots
to enjoy meals outside. Today, it7s all there, in outdoor rooms
defined by crisp hedges and linked by rose arbors and grass or
stepping-stone paths. “This garden is full of things I’ve had
to learn to grow/7
Joan says. “And once something blooms,
I’m hooked,”
